DONG Energy committed to proactive engagement with local communities

DONG Energy is to hold two community events in Grimsby and Stallingborough to give local people a chance to find out more about Hornsea Project One offshore wind farm.

Onshore cabling

  • The cable route will run approximately 38km from the landfall site at Horseshoe Point to the onshore substation at North Killingholme
  • The cable will be installed underground to minimise disturbance to local communities and traffic disruption
  • A number of investigations have been undertaken by DONG Energy, including ecological surveys, engineering appraisals and environmental studies which helped inform the basis of the chosen cable route. Feedback from key stakeholders and members of the local communities also assisted the process
  • Once installed, the onshore cable will transmit the electricity generated by the offshore wind farm to the onshore substation and then onto the electricity grid.

The exhibitions will provide members of the local community with an opportunity to find out more about the onshore cable installation works. Members of the project team will be on hand to answer questions about the construction works.

With a capacity of 1.2 gigawatts (GW), when built Hornsea Project One will be the world's largest offshore wind farm by a considerable margin, capable of providing enough renewable energy for well over 1 million homes.

Duncan Clark, programme director, said: “We know how important it is to engage with the community at every stage of the project, listen to their views and give them the opportunity to meet some of the project team. We want people to feel informed about the project and to know where to go if they have any questions. We strongly urge anyone who is interested to come see us and find out more.”

Hornsea Project One will span a huge area of approximately 407 square kilometres, which is over five times the size of the city of Hull. The offshore wind farm will use 7 megawatt (MW) wind turbines, with each one 190 metres tall – larger than the Gherkin building in London.
